Race #1: Are you serious?

I'm relatively certain that whomever planned the route for yesterday's 5k must be some sort of sadist. Either that, or I have an uncanny knack for only choosing races that inflict the most pain.

Yesterday's course was uphill. ALL uphill. Logically, one would think that if a race started and ended in the same place and contained a large percentage of hills, that there would be the same percentage of downhills. That was not the case with this race. I think the ratio was closer to 80% up, 20% down.

And it's not like I wasn't warned. The first thing the megaphone guy said was, "Welcome to the 5k that feels like a 10k. No, the course hasn't gotten any easier since last year, so good luck." I needed luck to make it through that race. It was uphill from the start. And it wasn't a nice gradual sloping uphill. No, it was uphill, like you could almost reach straight out and grab the ankles of the person in front of you because the incline was so steep. Alright, I may be exaggerating, but not much.

So I made it in nearly 32 minutes. And the best part was, Mom, Dad, and Dustin were there to cheer me on. They were real troupers to stand outside in the freezing cold and wait for me to finish. It wasn't easy, but I made it. 2 more weeks until the next race. I'm thinking if there are many hills in the next one, I may just turn around and walk home.

I'm amazed that you have the will to race...let alone in the cold!! Great job on that accomplishment!

Way to go!!! I remember running St. George and I had trained in Phoenix. It had horrible hills. The up was hard...but toward the end, it was the down that hurt the most. Way to stick it out!!!
