Carvin' Time

We spent the night together carving up our pumpkins. Parks has been incredibly excited to carve his. Every day he asks if this is the day we can carve pumpkins. Today he got the news he wanted to hear. He was ecstatic until he found out he would be the one scooping out the pumpkin's guts. Suddenly, he wasn't too keen on the idea of pumpkin carving.

He doesn't like to get messy. Or wet. Or muddy. Or anything else remotely dirty. So, luckily Aaron came to the rescue and helped him scoop out his pumpkin. And when all was said and done, I think they turned out pretty cute. Maddie's is a happy face. Parks' is a scary skeleton pirate and mine has an owl face. Aaron's is still a work in progress, but when he's done, his should look like this:

Halloween is one of Aaron's favorite holidays and it's starting to rub off on the kids. Parks can now sing several "Nightmare Before Christmas" songs by heart. He seems to think that Jack, the Pumpkin King, is every bit as central to Halloween as Santa is to Christmas. I think it's safe to say we have done an effective job of brainwashing the kid when it comes to Halloween.

However, we are straying from the usual Halloween traditions on Halloween night. The trick-or-treaters that come to our house will receive Halloween pencils and spider rings. (I know, I know, I can already hear the "boooooo's"). Ah well.

And, if you haven't carved your jack-o-lanterns yet, here are two of the best tips ever:

1. Use a canning jar lid to scrape out the inside of your pumpkin. It is amazing how well this works!

2. Cut your hole out of the bottom of the pumpkin, instead of the top. It makes it so much easier to light.

Happy Carving!

great tips! We haven't carved pumpkins this year. The kids painted some at a party yesterday and they really liked that. And my mom gives out halloween pretzels which are gross! My kids would love a spider ring and my dd would steal her brother's pencils!

I heart that pumpkin & want to see Aaron's finished product. I did a simple Jack Skellington face on mine this year, but nothing tricky like that one. I wonder what % of Mormons carved pumpkins Monday?
